![]() ![]() The bookstore adds ~35% and I've heard prevents direct selling of the book to the students by anyone but them. They probably sell it to the bookstore for ~8-10 cents a page, which is about the cost if you were to photocopy it yourself. I'm guessing their costs are ~2-3 cents a page but they are paying for designers who do my cover art, a sales rep and contact for me, other services I can use, and guarantees. The publisher makes money from economies of scale - I tell them "I'm going to have 1000 students in the next year" and they print 1000, thus saving themselves a lot of money by doing it all at once. Students get charged a little more than it would cost to photocopy the book itself (which is usually ~10 cents a page), and the extra few dollars is worth the higher quality and binding that you won't get from the copy center. You can sell your book to other schools though, and those profits you can keep. If a professor is doing this you could likely get them into trouble. ![]() It's a conflict of interest to earn profits from your own students, and public universities won't allow it. I publish a book that my students purchase. ![]()
